A 75th birthday for the '34 Ford

Two years ago, the hot-rodding world pulled out all the stops to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the iconic 1932 Ford, the hot-rodder's hot rod.

The high point of that jubilee was a gathering of the 75 most significant '32s in conjunction with the Grand National Roadster Show of 2007. It was held in its own hall at the L.A. County Fairplex in Pomona and was awash with fabulous Fords and hot-rod royalty.

Now, two years later, the 1934 Ford turns 75, with considerably less pomp and circumstance but no less love from its devotees.

The Model 40, as both the 1933 and 1934 Fords were designated, had a graceful grille in front and--while so many '32s are now and were then fenderless--most Model 40 survivors wear full, sweeping fenders over the front wheels and down the sides.

While much of the '32's notoriety flowed from its all-new, affordable V8, those first eight-cylinder engines were problematic to make and prone to numerous failures, many of which would have resulted in massive recalls were they issued today. But by the time the Model 40 Fords came out, the teething problems of the V8 had largely been cured.

So the '33 and '34 Fords were really better cars, mechanically, to begin with. And because the '32s often command more attention, a buyer could usually get a better price on a '34, all other things being equal.

Nonetheless, even in this diamond-jubilee year, celebrations are decidedly muted for this car. We attended a pretty good one this week at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. The museum has several Model 40s on display, including famous representatives such as the innovative, record-setting Pierson Brothers Coupe and the California Kid, now more famous than the Martin Sheen movie of the same name for which it was made. The cars will stay on display at the Parks museum through Father's Day. For more, visit www.museum.nhra.com.

Then, as part of the museum's regular monthly Prolong Twilight Cruise Night, organizer John Duran added a healthy, shining row of '33 and '34 Fords to the sprawling, eclectic mix of rods and customs that usually fill the museum's parking lot. There were yellow and orange, blown and unblown, black and purple, street and competition cars lined up next to the fence by the front entrance.

Bob Slovick was first drawn in by two movie cars.

"American Grafitti and The California Kid really took me in, made me crazy" he said.

He built a '34 with a 427 big-block topped by a massive Weiand blower. The plates read, "BLON 34." Did he consider a '32?

"No," he said. "I just like the look of the '34, it's more rounded; the '32 looks kind of square."

Petersen Automotive Museum director Dick Messer drove his own '34 Tudor to the show.

"It's like driving a normal automobile," said Messer of his highly modified, highly modernized car. It sports a Corvette drivetrain, air conditioning and power seats. "I drive it all the time."

Messer understands the difference in public perception between the '34 and the '32.

"The '32s were like, 'Oh man, I got a Deuce,' the '34s were like, 'Oh yeah, I got one of those, too."

Art Bereuter spent seven years building his orange--unchopped--1934 Ford 3-window. Now it has a 420-hp Cleveland V8, a C6 transmission and a nine-inch Currie rear end. Why a '34 instead of the '32s everybody else has?

"I had a car before this, a '29 sedan delivery," he said. "Then I saw this car, I don't know, I wanted it."

The same thing happened to longtime NHRA announcer Dave McClelland.

"The '34 is the car I've lusted after since I was 16," McClelland said. "I saw a '34 3-window when I was in high school, I told my dad I wanted it, took him over to where the car was parked. My dad said, 'Absolutely no way are you going to have this car.' I ended up with a '39 Plymouth. But I maintain that his rejection of my '34 is what led me to my life of cars."

McClelland still has not gotten a '34 but, he says, he's not dead yet.

"I walk past a line of cars like that and it's just terminal lust."

FIAT 500C MAKES INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC DEBUT AT GENEVA

A worldwide preview of the new Fiat 500C will be taking place at the Geneva Motor Show in early March, before its launch throughout Europe in the spring. This original cabriolet pays homage to the open-top 1957 model, whilst offering leading-edge solutions for mechanical installations, powerplants and interior comfort. All this in authentic Fiat tradition, giving access to higher segment engineering and state-of-the-art technology.

Featuring an innovative soft top – an unrestricted window to the sky – the new 500C is exactly the same size as the basic model (3.55 m x 1.65 m x 1.49 m), and utilises the same three powerplants: 1.3 litre 75 hp MultiJet Turbodiesel coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission, and the two 1.2 litre 69 hp and 1.4 litre 100 hp petrol engines, available with either manual or robotised Dualogic transmission. Providing different features, all three engine types are responsive and flexible, offering strong performance based on sophisticated technology. Standard features include in-built reliability, robust construction, high quality build and environmental friendliness.

Moreover, as proof of Fiat Automobiles’ commitment to ecology and sustainable mobility, the new 500C incorporates the company’s recently announced Start&Stop system, an innovative device which initiates engine shutdown and subsequent re-ignition. To this end, at every complete stop, when shifting to neutral and releasing the clutch, the engine is switched off, and then restarted simply by selecting a gear.

Created by the Fiat Styling Centre and manufactured at the Tichy plant in Poland, the Fiat 500C incorporates all the strong points of the basic model, namely top-of-segment safety features, proper accommodation for four adults, and generous luggage space combined with easy loading potential, even with the soft top fully open, thanks to a clever parallelogram hinge system.

A highly original exercise in design, the soft top of the Fiat 500C stands out for its refined electrically operated linkage and engineering solutions of great quality and finish, such as the glass rear window and the built-in centrally positioned high mounted stop light. Available in three colours (ivory, red and black), this original soft top will be matched with several body colours, two of which have been conceived specifically for the new car in a brilliant Pearl Red and a special Warm Grey.

Thanks to the adoption of the innovative sliding soft top combined with a design concept which retains the vehicle’s all-round protection, the Fiat 500C offers a delightful motoring experience at any time of the year. All told, its many special features make this new car one of the best equipped cabriolet models currently available in the city-car segment.

The 500C is further proof of Fiat's undisputed leadership in this vehicle class, where continuous innovation ensures that its position as the industry's standard is maintained. In fact the car sets new standards in terms of comfort and safety, engineering and appointments whilst maintaining a unique and inimitable Italian style. A new cabriolet has been created which provides excitement and sustained driving pleasure, combining captivating lines with the performance of flexible, environment-friendly, low consumption engines.

Mercedes SLK series

Here is the Amazing SLK series of Mercedes Benz . See some details and Features available.

Flawless performance
The SLK-Class offers a range of four different engines, each offering an exquisite blend of power and performance. From the new and improved SLK 200 KOMPRESSOR to the top of the range SLK 55 AMG, this is driving at its most exhilarating.

SLK 200 KOMPRESSOR
With its 4-cylinder supercharged engine, the SLK 200 KOMPRESSOR was no slouch to begin with. But we’ve now boosted its power output by 21 hp to a gutsy 184 hp. And we’ve cut fuel consumption without compromising performance and response.

SLK 280
One of two V6 units, this 3.0 litre engine now produces greater torque and a hefty 231 hp. This increased power translates into a 0-60 mph time of around 6.3 seconds and ensures a thrilling drive every time you take the wheel.

SLK 350
The larger of the SLK’s V6 engines, this 3.5 litre unit boasts impressive performance figures, including an output of 305 hp at 7200 rpm. But it’s only when you fire up the SLK 350 and hear the sound that you’ll really appreciate the power at your disposal.

SLK 55 AMG
The SLK 55 AMG features a handcrafted, naturally aspirated V8 engine that delivers a staggering 360 hp and an incredible rated torque of 510 Nm. This makes it the most powerful engine in its segment, enabling the SLK 55 AMG to sprint from a standstill to 60mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Appreciate the change
We've upgraded transmission technology in the new SLK-Class and included innovative new options. The result is our most crisp and direct changing ever.

In the SLK 200 KOMPRESSOR, SLK 280 and SLK 350, we've revised the six speed manual transmission. But the SLK 55 AMG features the 7G-Tronic automatic transmission as standard, the world's first seven-speed automatic gearbox - F1-style steering wheel shift paddles are also included (7G-Tronic is available as an option on the SLK 280 and SLK 350).

Tuned to perfection
The suspension on the new SLK-Class has been tuned to deliver superlative dynamism and agility, plus state-of-the-art safety.

A new three-link front axle and multi-link independent rear suspension ensure a smooth yet precise drive. And there’s an optional lowered sports suspension, for those craving a ‘racing car’ sensation.

A turn for the better
Behind the wheel, the new SLK-Class feels responsive, poised and agile. It sets the standard for roadsters, largely due to the new direct steering.

We’ve changed to a rack and pinion system, and the result is a flawless connection to every curve and bend. Parameter steering (speed-sensitive power steering) is fitted as standard, with the new Direct Steering system available as an option (standard on the SLK 55 AMG).

Maximum agility and enjoyment
A new option on the SLK-Class, Direct Steer is a speed-sensitive power steering system developed specifically for Mercedes-Benz Roadsters. And it certainly brings out the best in them.

Thanks to an ingenious new spur rack, the system offers a sportier feel and generally reduces the range of steering wheel movement required – whatever the situation. On motorways it ensures good straight-line stability. On winding country roads you’ll enjoy superb touch and response. And in those tight parking spaces, it provides maximum steering assistance.

Direct Steer is fitted as standard to the SLK 55 AMG.

On the road price from £29,440.00
CO2 tax from 24%

The 2009 Honda Fit ranks 1 out of 35

The 2009 Honda Fit ranks 1 out of 35 Affordable Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 25 published reviews and test drives of the Honda Fit, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Redesigned for 2009, the larger, sportier Fit still has quality and utility that few subcompacts can match. Although it's an expensive car compared to other subcompact cars and hatchbacks, the Fit is a good value over time. It's even the 2009 U.S. News Best Car for the Money in the subcompact class.

Following its first ride on North American roads, the Honda Fit quickly became an auto industry darling for its fun driving dynamics, fuel efficiency and unique cargo and seating modes. It's been one of Car and Driver's "Top 10 Urban Vehicles" for 2008, and a "10Best" for both 2008 and 2009. It was also the recipient of Popular Mechanics' Automotive Excellence Award for 2007. Just two years later Honda has introduced a new and improved Fit that's once again captivated the automotive press with its personality and spaciousness. In addition to a 10Best recognition, the Fit is a nominee for 2009 North American Car of the Year, is a Consumer Guide Best Buy, and was selected as one of Automobile Magazine's All-Stars for 2009.

Even the car's perceived shortcomings -- a hefty price tag considering its size and class and no stability control option for the base trim -- do not prevent the overwhelming majority from labeling the Fit one of the best small car or hatchback options. But if you consider the absence of stability control a deal-breaker, keep the VW Rabbit with its impressive cargo space and standard electronic stabilization program on your shortlist of hatchbacks. The Rabbit's MSRP can be somewhat high, however, and its EPA numbers are lower than many subcompacts. Value-conscious shoppers looking to avoid frequent fill-ups should check out the Toyota Yaris.

The 2009 Fit is now slightly larger and has sacrificed some of the last generation's fuel efficiency to improve its all-around driving experience. The windshield has been moved forward by 4.7 inches to add to improve visibility and add to the sense of spaciousness. Rear passengers are treated to 1.6 extra inches of rear legroom. The engine's 9 horsepower increase and variable valve timing provides more pep out the gate, while a stiffer chassis facilitates tauter handling. Despite all the recent changes, the 2009 Fit still comes in two trims, the base model and the Fit Sport.

World's first mass-produced electric car

While unveiling the sexy shape of its new Model S saloon, innovative US company, Tesla, announced that it would put the 'world's first mass-produced electric car' into production in 2011.

The Jaguar-esque shape and optimistic timeline are not the only reasons Tesla will be grabbing headlines around the world today (March 27), as claims to the Model S's abilities are quite staggering.

Utilising the company's advanced lithium-ion battery pack, the Model S sprints from 0-60mph in 'under six seconds' on the way to a top speed of 130mph. A Sport version will apparently cut the 0-60mph time by a further second.

Despite such performance, the Model S has been designed to carry up to seven occupants and masses of their luggage. That's thanks to a large space up front where the engine would normally reside, and a flat-floored interior with stowable seats.

The battery pack is located underneath the floor, which lowers the centre of gravity, as well as enhancing packaging. Tesla claims that it will be possible to swap the battery pack for a fully charged one in less time than it takes to fill a conventional car's fuel tank.

Even if battery-swapping facilities are not available, the Model S can be recharged from any 120-, 240- or 480V power supply, with an impressive 45-minute charge possible if the highest rating is available.

In ideal conditions, the Model S will have a range of 300-miles, though buyers will have to pay more for that capability, as the entry-level version does only 160-miles on a charge.

The 2011 launch is, however, dependant on Tesla receiving $350 million (about £242 million) in federal loans from the US government, which the company is confident it will receive.

Tesla will expand its dealer network outside the US with Munich and London earmarked for showrooms, possibly as early late 2009. Pricing is predicted to start at $49,900 in the US - about £34,500.

Price comparison: Honda main dealer vs. Supermarkets

2006 55 Reg Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi Sport with 35,537 miles, for £8,499.
Whereas the best deal we could find on Honda’s website was this:
2006 06 Civic Sport 2.2 i-CTDi Sport, with 29,890 miles, for £ 9,995

Most people think main dealers are expensive. But, in the current market you have to look at every car on a case-by-case basis.

Most people only shop for cars to test drive on a classified website of cars for sale. This leads them to first of all find the kind of cars they are interested in.

As an example, we have been looking for a two and half to three year old Honda Civic diesel (i-CTDi ) in Sport trim.

Then, because of the nature of classified website listings most people start to compare price and mileage. The car with the lowest combination of both is often assumed to be the best value car – because it is the cheapest.

Used Car Expert set out to see if that’s true…
So first stop, of course, was the Used Car Expert price guide, which revealed that average mileage is about 25,000, that a fair price is £10,500, the low price is £10,992 and the best price we can expect is £8,911.

Looking on the major classified websites, within a 60 mile radius of home, we were instantly struck by this little beauty from one of the big supermarkets:

So what's the catch? That's a £1,496 saving for two cars that look pretty much the same.

Well there are potentially 3 catches with this car:

1. The mileage
The cheaper car has 5,500 miles more on the clock and is a thumping 10,000 miles above average for diesel Honda Civics.

2. The service and repair costs
The service interval for the 2.2 diesel Civic is every 12,500 miles or every year, whichever is the sooner.

So both cars should have their first two services and will need another one at some point in the coming year.

The main dealer car has a complete service history, and is prepared to Honda’s used approved programme, which should mean it will be 12 months until you have to pay for a service. At £247 for a service, this is good news.

With the cheaper car, that bill could be just a couple of months away.

Plus, the cheaper car will be at the end of its manufacturer warranty. The dealer selling the cheaper car will offer you a warranty, which is from the AA, but it will cost at least another £250. Whereas the main dealer car comes with extended 12 months warranty included in the price.

3. The preparation, especially the recalls
As you can see in our ‘behind the scenes’ features, a used approved Honda is prepared to ‘as new’ standard; having every imperfection repaired.

If the cheaper car has any interior damage or a couple of body work dents (such as trolley dents in the doors) then each one will cost at least £50 to put right and bring the car up to the equivalent standard of the main dealer car.

The car will also be serviced (if required) so that breakdown is less likely and you will get roadside assistance worth another £100.

Then there are the safety recalls…

Some Honda Civics built between 13/09/2005 and 12/10/2007 are subject to a recall, where the car will have its handbrake assembly replaced for free. This is because it has been identified that if the handbrake is applied with the release button depressed, there is a small risk that the handbrake may not latch sufficiently to hold the vehicle securely on a slope.

Any car sold by a main dealer will have had all such recalls completed. Cars bought from independents may not.*

Conclusion
The main dealer car is not £1,496 more expensive than the supermarket car.

If you take the servicing savings, warranty, roadside cover and bodywork repairs into account, it is less than £899.

For a car that has done 5,000 miles less, is less likely to break down, has had its safety recalls, won’t cost a penny in repairs for the year ahead (there is a full manufacturer backed warranty), I think, even though it is more money, in the long-run, it’s the better value deal.

2006 55 Reg Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi Sport with 35,537 miles, for £8,499.

SEAT unveils hybrid prototype

Hybrids are in vogue at the moment, particularly with the new Honda Insight in the spotlight this week, so SEAT has picked a good time to unveil its very own green petrol-electric car - the Leon Twin Drive Ecomotive.

SEAT's Twin Drive system is still in development, so the prototype unveiled at its Martorell Technical Centre in Spain is merely a glimpse of the maker's intention to up the green ante in the near future - but it means there are currently no economy or emissions figures to tell us if the Leon is a Prius-beater.

The Leon Twin Drive's electric motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries, and the car features extensive gearbox, braking, heating and cooling systems modifications.

Twin Drive works in a similar way to Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive tech - by running on electricity alone at town speeds, only using the petrol motor when more power is needed or the electric unit runs out of charge. It's a plug-in hybrid too, and it paves the way for a range of hybrid SEATs set to hit showrooms by 2014. The maker also wants to 'phase out the internal combustion engine' in future Ecomotive cars, which means it's already developing electric vehicles.
