Tata Motors to deliver first Nano on Friday

Tata Motors Ltd, India's largest vehicles maker, said on Thursday it would deliver the Nano, the world's cheapest car, to its first customer on Friday.

Chairman Ratan Tata had showcased the Nano at an auto show in New Delhi in January last year, but consumer bookings began only in April this year after the project was delayed due to land disputes at its planned site in the eastern state of West Bengal.

The plant for producing the Nano was shifted to a new site in Gujarat on the west coast, but the first batch of Nanos would come from its car plant in Pantnagar in northern India.

Tata has assured price protection for the first 100,000 customers, for whom the cars will be available for 100,000 rupees ($2,053), excluding taxes.

5 Steps to A Great Rental Car Experience

There are times in one's life when the use of rental cars cannot be avoided. When someone plows into you at an intersection, when you are taking a 2-day trip and your compact car just does not have enough room to stretch out, these are times when you are happy that there are rental cars at your disposal. Before you rent that car, though, you should know some things about the process.

1- The first step involved in obtaining a rental car is to do research on the companies in your local area. There are a number of nation wide companies and more than likely local companies to choose from when conducting your research. Try to narrow them down to three or four companies that are closest to either your pick up location or your destination.

2- You will want to ask about procedures that may be required by the rental company. Many companies require that the car be fueled up before its return, if this is not done, they will charge you extra for it. It may also be in your best interest to ask what the fee would be if the car is needed for longer than expected as well as what the rate is for late drop off.

3- If you have personal auto insurance, call your agent to see if you are insured with a rental car as well. This will allow you to save money by turning down the insurance offered by the rental company at the time of vehicle pick up.

4- Finally, you have chosen the company and the car, its time to pick it up. Make sure that you have the paper work that you will need. Most companies will require you to show your drivers license, be sure to have it. Also, your proof of auto insurance, if you will be turning their insurance down. A major credit card is necessary; if you are not using cash to rent your car, do not count on them taking a check.

5- Be sure to read the contract and ask questions about anything that you do not understand. It's better to take sometime at the counter or on the phone to pin down the details, than to think you got it and have to deal with the company in the event of an accident. Ask questions!

What exactly in the backend happening for Electrical Cars

Electrical Cars Facts

Powered purely by advanced lithium-ion batteries, our all-electric range of vehicles are designed to tackle the challenge of CO2 emissions - by producing none at all.

So you enjoy a clean, quiet, smooth drive that doesn’t damage the environment. And because we are developing more renewable ways to power, build and recycle every EV we make, the sustainability of our commitment will grow and grow.

Technology has advanced to the point where EVs are now more practical, more powerful, and faster to drive and recharge than ever before. Making them easier to own and more fun to drive. And they look pretty good, too.

Here are some key EV components (and their terminology explained):

• Connecter box - where the plug is connected to main current

• Power inverter - changes DC into AC (battery = DC, motor =AC)

• Transformer - DC-DC converter which changes 400V (from engine) into 12V
(for the auxiliary, e.g. AC, lights etc)

• Battery charger - the device that converts AC 220V to DC 400V to charge the battery

• Electric motor

• Reducer – this is the speed reduction gear (like a gearbox). The gear ratio is fixed, front
and reverse

What Nissan is discovering ???

We have always worked to make our vehicles more energy efficient. But now we’re taking this strategy to another level.

The Renault-Nissan alliance is leading the global automotive industry in developing zero-emission vehicles for everyone, thus helping address the widespread concerns of global warming. Our advanced, compact lithium-ion batteries are class-leading. And our new partnerships with governments and leading organisations all over the world are helping to make our EVs easier to obtain, own and enjoy.

In the summer of 2009, the first of these cars will be revealed.

And beyond that? More cars, more choice, more to enjoy - all built, powered and recycled by an increased level of renewable energy. And of course, all with zero emissions.

What exactly will be ready ???

What will our first EV look like? The design is still under wraps, but what it will give you isn’t.

Its unique design will be built around a pure-electric platform. It will have room for five passengers and their luggage, and give a range of more than 95 miles. Maintenance will be simple, it will be equipped with the latest lithium-ion battery - and there’ll be no compromise on performance.

The EV Nissan will introduce to Japan and North America in 2010 will have new, unique body style on an all-new vehicle platform. It will be big enough and powerful enough to carry five adults. It will have the performance of a typical 1.6-litre petrol-engined car and can be recharged to 80% battery capacity in around 25 minutes.

The lithium-ion batteries developed for the EVs are more efficient, more powerful and faster to recharge than anything gone before. They have twice the density of conventional batteries, doubling the vehicle’s cruising ability. Their thinner structure allows for more room inside the vehicle itself. Advanced power output gives better acceleration and recharging capabilities are improved thanks to more efficient regenerative braking.

Lithium-ion batteries

Key points:

• Lithium-ion batteries are the key component in an EV

• They have twice the capacity, are half the size and provide 50% higher power output
compared to a conventional battery of the same weight

• Their compact design allows for improved vehicle packaging as the pack will be installed
under the EV’s floor, so cabin and/or cargo space isn’t compromised

• Their laminated structure offers improved cooling capacity for better reliability

• Lithium-ion do not experience the ‘memory effect’ which occurs when incomplete charging
cycles lead to a drastic decline in range

• Each Nissan battery should maintain 80% of its capacity - even after five years of use

• A battery pack is composed of battery modules and a battery module is composed of
four cells

Find OUT More about Electric Evolution. BE a Part of IT

We believe the best way to address the problem of emissions is simply not to produce any emissions at all.

The Renault-Nissan alliance is leading the global automotive industry in developing zero-emission vehicles and bringing them within the reach of everyone. Yet our strategy goes beyond the vehicle itself. We are investing in renewable energy sources to help build, power and recycle them. And put in place the global infrastructure to make this happen.

CO2 emissions: FCVs and EVs produce the same: none at all.

Efficiencies in electric vehicle technology go beyond the powerful, light, easily rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. EVs have the highest rate of tank to wheel energy conversion, and the CO2 emissions from source of fuel to driven wheel are massively reduced compared to conventional power units.
EVs have a better conversion rate compared to other fuel cell technology. In addition, FCVs and EVs produce no emissions, and EVs use 100% of the energy it produces (compared to 80% for a standard fuel vehicle).
Nissan’s global commitment to bringing more of zero-emission cars to more people
has led to the formation of new alliances and partnerships with governments and leading organisations.

7 Great Tips To Save Money on Car Parts and Maintenance

Taking care of your car maintenance can be very rewarding if done properly so here's a list of seven tips that can help you save money on your car parts and service.

1. A well tuned car can has a fuel consumption from 25% to 33% lower than a poorly tuned car making a tune-up cheaper than driving without it, tuning your car for better performance can save you between $150 and $250 per year.

2. Regardless of the number of miles the manual recommends a oil change and filter change you should change them every 3,000 miles. This is one of the most important factors in your engine's life since it's going to prolong your engine's life and you're going to save on engine car parts. The potential savings are $500 to $3000.

3. Dirty air filter means more gasoline used and reduces the engine's life so you should check it regularly, maybe monthly. The air filter can be cleaned by blowing it with a hose or can be replaced. You can save about $130 per year..

4. Using steel-belted radial tires can increase the number of miles you make per year by up to 10%, saving this way about $130 per year.

5. Most cars, don't work better on premium gas, so, unless your car is pinging or knocking you shouldn't use higher octane gas. If your car doesn't have a high performance engine, using the gas that best suits your car's engine can save you $200 to $400 per year.

6. Having under inflated tires makes your engine burn about 6% more gas so make sure you check your tire pressure regularly.

7. If your tires are improperly balanced the tread on them will be destroyed. In addition, your suspension and shock absorbers can be damaged leading to more expense on car parts and service. Balancing your tires once a year can add thousands of miles to their life.

CITROËN’S GRAND C4 PICASSO IS ONCE, TWICE, THREE TIMES A WINNER AT WHAT CAR? AWARDS

CITROËN’s Grand C4 Picasso has scored a hat-trick at the prestigious 2009 What Car? Car of the Year Awards, winning the ‘MPV of the Year’ accolade for the third year in a row.

The CITROËN Grand C4 Picasso is the perfect vehicle for the modern family on the move. With its contemporary good looks, light and spacious cabin and clever storage solutions it’s no wonder the seven-seat MPV won over the hearts and minds of the What Car? judging panel for a third successive year.

As well as being both stylish and safe, with a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, the CITROËN Grand C4 Picasso has also been recognised for its environmental credentials picking up the ‘Green MPV of the Year’ title at What Car?’s inaugural Green Awards. The winning 1.6HDi SX emits just 140g/km CO2 making it a leaner, greener option for environmentally conscious drivers.

What Car? say “CITROËN’s Grand C4 Picasso is definitely that — grand. It’s not just big, either; it’s also versatile, stylish, easy to drive and affordable”. They then go on to say “No MPV does a better job of transporting you, your brood and your gubbins” before concluding succinctly by saying “Family orientated cars don’t get any better than this”.

Receiving the award, Xavier Duchemin, Managing Director of CITROËN UK, commented; “As Europe’s most popular MPV manufacturer, we’re honoured and delighted to be receiving this award for the third year running. On top of this, we’re especially excited about the forthcoming CITROËN C3 Picasso, which is set to complement its award winning sibling in the next few months.”

A Rookies Guide to Car Rentals

Renting a car can be a lot of fun, just plain fun. Car rentals offer the renter the opportunity to drive a car, truck or SUV that they normally would not or could not buy. Renting a car is for a weekend get away, to impress someone or just to have something different to drive for a couple of days are some of the most popular reasons to visit a rental company. However, as fun as it is to rent cars, there are some not so fun things that must happen before you drive it off the lot.

1- Keep in mind that most rental companies will not rent to any driver under the age of 25. If you fall under that magic number, you more than likely will need to get an older relative or friend to sign the actual contract for you.

2- You will of course, need a valid drivers license to rent the car. If you do not have a license, they will not rent to you under any circumstances. Most companies will also require you to reserve your car with the use of a major credit card, however, you can pay in cash if you would prefer.

3- You do not need to have personal auto insurance to rent a car; they will ask you if you would like to purchase their insurance for the duration of the rental contract. If, however, you have your own insurance policy, be sure to call your agent to see if you are covered during your use of a rental car. If your personal auto policy covers you, there is no need to purchase a policy from the rental company.

4- It is wise to call several car rental companies to inquire about prices, car availability and specials. Ask about options such as upgrades, pick up and drop off services, unlimited mileage and weekend versus weekly rental prices. Many companies will also offer special deals to customers who are members of other organizations (i.e. credit unions, warehouse clubs, etc).

5- After you have called around, found the best deal and reserved your choice car; it is time to pick it up. Be sure to have all of your personal paperwork with you, including your auto policy if you will not be buying theirs. Before you sign the contract, read through it and ask any questions you may have.
